Jake Davey Finds His Feet and His Sound on 'Right Where I'm At'
Jake Davey has packed more into the past three years than most musicians would care to experience in a lifetime.
A serious spinal cord injury, the possibility of never walking again, becoming a father and a return to performing that eventually took him all the way to Nashville. It's been a remarkable journey for the Australian country singer-songwriter, and those experiences have found their way into Right Where I'm At, a six-track EP that brings together his love of contemporary country music with a more personal approach to songwriting.
Leading the release is ‘Wildside’, a driving country-pop track built around big drums, guitars and a chorus made for singing along. Written in Nashville with Jackson James and David Evans, the song celebrates that one person in every group who knows how to turn a good night into a great one. It's full of energy and a little mischief, drawing on the polished sounds of modern country without losing its sense of fun. As Jake explains, ‘It's that girl who's always up for a good time. The life of the party who, after one drink, is ready to send it and let that wild side come out’.
But there's considerably more to "Right Where I'm At" than a collection of feel-good country songs. Across six tracks, Jake explores relationships, family, growing older and the importance of making the most of the time we're given. ‘Workin' On Me’ was inspired by learning he was about to become a father, bringing a more traditional country feel to a song about responsibility and becoming a better person. ‘Til It's Over’ reflects on getting older and taking opportunities while they're there, while ‘Take a Drive’ finds comfort in the simple pleasure of reconnecting with someone you love.
The mood shifts on ‘No Good for Me’, a song about knowing a relationship isn't working but struggling to walk away. Beginning with a restrained, almost lo-fi arrangement before opening into a bigger production, it captures the emotional push and pull of the story. The single also made its mark on Australian radio, reaching No. 10 on the AMRAP Community Radio Regional Airplay Chart and No. 20 on the Tasmanian Oz CMR Country Airplay Chart. The EP closes with ‘Got It All’, returning to the upbeat country-pop territory that makes ‘Wildside’ such an infectious opening statement.
One of the more interesting things about this record is that Jake produced, engineered and mixed the entire project himself. Having studied audio production straight out of high school, he's spent more than 15 years working across songwriting, recording, production and filmmaking. That experience has given him the freedom to shape the music from the initial idea through to the finished recording, moving comfortably between acoustic country arrangements and bigger, contemporary productions. It's a hands-on approach that gives "Right Where I'm At" a consistent musical identity despite the different directions its songs take.
Of course, the biggest influence on Jake's outlook came in 2023, when a serious spinal cord injury left him facing the possibility that he might never walk again. Music became an important part of his recovery, and as he gradually regained his ability to walk, he also found his way back to writing, recording and performing. Three years later, he was standing on stage in Nashville during CMA Fest 2026, making his Music City debut at Sounds Australia's THE AUSSIE BBQ at Martin's Bar-B-Que Joint. It's a long way from the uncertainty he faced following his injury, and a reminder of just how much can change in a few years.
His music has continued to gather momentum along the way, with support from ABC Country, Triple M Country and Nova Fresh Country, an appearance on the cover of Apple Music's "Today's Country" playlist and more than 2.5 million career streams. He's also featured on the US Ty Bentli Show, where his recovery and return to music became part of a broader conversation about his career.
Away from the stage, Jake is balancing life as a husband and father with running his own creative business and building his music career. Those everyday responsibilities, alongside everything he's experienced, have given the songs on "Right Where I'm At" a sense of perspective that goes beyond the usual country-pop themes.
‘I've been through a lot over the past few years, both personally and creatively, and I wanted this EP to capture all of those different sides of me’, Jake says. ‘I'm not trying to be somewhere else or pretend to be something I'm not. This is where I'm at right now, and I'm really proud of this project’.
With the EP now released, Jake is preparing to take the songs back on the road, including a return to the Tamworth Country Music Festival in January. And while ‘Wildside’ might be the track that gets people moving, it's the experiences behind the rest of the record that give it meaning. After everything Jake Davey has been through, *Right Where I'm At* feels less like an album title and more like an appreciation of how far he's come.
