Canadian country artist Brandi Caroline explores self-worth, complicated relationships and the freedom that comes with reclaiming your identity on Living Room, a deeply personal ten-track debut solo album.

Finding your voice sometimes means recognising how much of yourself you've given away along the way. For Canadian singer-songwriter Brandi Caroline, that realisation sits at the heart of her debut solo album, Living Room.

Across ten tracks, Caroline explores the patterns we fall into, the relationships that shape us and the difficult decisions that can ultimately lead to greater independence and self-understanding. The album's title track captures a particularly confronting moment: recognising that you've spent so much time accommodating someone else's needs that there's little space left for your own.

‘Living Room’ examines the emotional toll of a one-sided relationship, where giving more never seems to be enough. It's a reflection on misplaced loyalty and the point at which standing up for yourself becomes more important than holding on.

Rather than focusing solely on the moment a relationship reaches its breaking point, the album looks at the behaviours and circumstances that allow those dynamics to develop, tracing the gradual process of recognising your own worth. Produced by Murray Pulver, Living Room also represents an important creative shift for Caroline, who has spent much of her musical career working collaboratively in bands.

'Releasing my debut album as a solo artist has been such an artistically formative experience for me. Having been a serial member of bands, I have always loved the collaborative part of art and making music as a team. I wondered if doing a solo album would feel…lonely', she explains. 'But, I really felt that I had something to say, something I wanted to communicate with the world, and so I traversed into new territory.'

What she discovered was that stepping out on her own created an unexpected sense of connection rather than isolation.

'What I found when planning, writing, recording, and sharing this music, is that being a solo artist didn't feel lonely at all. It almost felt the opposite, because I was able to communicate with others, in a manner that felt the most genuine to me. It was liberating.'

Raised on a farm in Saskatchewan, Caroline's musical foundations are closely tied to Canada's prairie country landscape, although her career has taken her well beyond those roots.

Her musical journey has included studying classical voice at the University of Melbourne, where she completed a Master of Music, alongside developing a sound that blends cinematic country with elements of retro folk-rock. That combination of influences has helped shape a versatile career as both a performer and songwriter.

Two of her songs have reached the Top 40 on the Billboard Canada Country charts, while her music has also appeared in film and television, including a cameo performance in the Netflix series My Life with the Walter Boys.

Her live experience includes appearances at major Canadian festivals Big Valley Jamboree and Boots & Hearts, as well as performances alongside Tom Cochrane, Tebey and Corb Lund. She has also performed the Canadian national anthem at the MLB All-Star Game.

With Living Room, however, Caroline places her own experiences and perspective firmly at the centre of the music. The album moves through themes of vulnerability, personal boundaries and self-discovery, exploring what happens when familiar patterns are questioned and the need for change becomes impossible to ignore.

For an artist accustomed to sharing the creative process with others, making a solo record has provided the opportunity to communicate on her own terms.

'I can't wait for the fans to hear it, and hear me, as I am', Caroline says.

It's a fitting sentiment for an album built around the importance of making space for yourself, both in relationships and in life.
