Nathan Lamont revisits young love on new single ‘Like We Used To’
Wiradjuri country singer-songwriter Nathan Lamont brings a fresh burst of energy to his new single ‘Like We Used To’, blending modern country-pop with a story about young love and the changing dynamics of relationships.
For Wagga Wagga country artist Nathan Lamont, a simple idea about young love has become a high-energy country anthem built for the live stage. Released on 30 October following his appearance at the Country Calling Showcase at Groundwater Country Music Festival, ‘Like We Used To’ combines punchy drums, twangy guitars and a big singalong chorus with a touch of old-school country swagger.
Behind its upbeat sound is a story about two people navigating the changes that come with time and wondering whether they can rediscover the connection they once shared.
'“Like We Used To” is a really personal song for me, but in a way that I think a lot of people can relate to', Lamont explains. 'It's about looking back at a time when life felt simpler, remembering the little things that made a relationship special and wondering if you can find some of that feeling again as life changes.'
The song was written in Nashville alongside Australian songwriter Jesse Dozzi during Lamont's 2025 CMAA Sister Cities Nashville Exchange, an opportunity that allowed him to develop his songwriting and build international industry connections. Beginning with images of late-night drives and young romance, the pair developed an energetic country-pop arrangement that keeps the mood light despite the song's reflective lyrics.
'We wanted to make something that felt nostalgic without being heavy, so we leaned into a big, upbeat country-pop sound with driving guitars and a really catchy chorus', Lamont says.
Produced by Michael De Lorenzis, ‘Like We Used To’ was created with the live stage firmly in mind, combining the organic sound of a country band with polished contemporary production.
'I had one request to Michael, which was to give me the type of energy I could start a show to and Michael absolutely nailed that balance between the live, organic feel of the guitars and a polished modern country-pop production.'
The single follows ‘Loves To Hate Me’, which reached number one on both the AMRAP Community Radio National and Regional Airplay Charts across all genres, as well as number 30 on the Country Songs Top 40 Australian Airplay Chart.
Accompanying the release is a light-hearted visualiser filmed at a winery in Pokolbin by Jeremy Minett of Eyes and Ears Creative. Working with country line-dance choreographer Dusty Rose, Lamont incorporated a routine combining traditional line dancing with TikTok-inspired moves. Although he admits dancing doesn't come naturally, the experience was an opportunity to have some fun with the song.
'I definitely got in my head about the dancing because I have absolutely no natural coordination, but I gave it my best shot', he says. 'In the end, I think that probably adds to the fun of it. It's not meant to take itself too seriously, and that was really the whole point of the visualiser.'
A proud Wiradjuri man from the Riverina region of NSW, Lamont has been building his reputation since launching his recording career in 2023. With more than four million global streams, three Toyota Star Maker Grand Final appearances and two top-five finishes in the APRA AMCOS Professional Development Awards, he has established a growing audience for his contemporary country sound.
In 2025, he was awarded the CMAA Nashville Sister Cities Scholarship, while his live appearances have included Deni Ute Muster, Gympie Music Muster and Groundwater Country Music Festival. His online presence has also helped introduce his music to new listeners, with more than 90,000 TikTok followers engaging with his performances and original songs.
Now Lamont is preparing to take ‘Like We Used To’ on the road, with upcoming shows across New South Wales and Victoria.
'I'm really looking forward to getting back on the road with the band and playing these shows over the coming months', he says. 'I've not done a lot of touring in the past, so to have the opportunity to visit a string of different towns and cities in a small period of time is very new and exciting for me.'
With its driving rhythm, infectious chorus and relatable storytelling, ‘Like We Used To’ brings a lively new dimension to Lamont's growing catalogue. It's a track designed to translate naturally from the recording studio to the stage, giving audiences plenty of opportunity to turn up the volume and sing along.
