Sammy White pays tribute to beloved Melody on new single ‘Where All the Good Dogs Go’
Australian country singer-songwriter Sammy White has released a heartfelt tribute to her beloved cocker spaniel, Melody, with ‘Where All the Good Dogs Go’, a song celebrating the special bond between people and their four-legged companions.
For Australian country artist Sammy White, her cocker spaniel Melody was more than a family pet. She was a constant companion through some of life's biggest milestones, having been by White's side since her teenage years.
When Melody passed away unexpectedly, White turned to something that had always helped her make sense of life's experiences: songwriting.
The result is ‘Where All the Good Dogs Go’, released on 23 October, a touching tribute to the dog who had shared so many chapters of her life. Co-written with Peta Cherae Peters, the song imagines a beautiful place where much-loved dogs can run freely, surrounded by everything that once brought them joy.
Rather than dwelling on the sadness of saying goodbye, White captures the happiness of the years they spent together, offering a comforting thought to anyone who has ever wondered where their faithful companions might go.
One of White's favourite lines paints a picture of Melody running through open fields, chasing butterflies and bees. It's a simple image that captures the warmth and innocence of their relationship, and the hope that one day they might meet again. The release offers a more tender side of an artist whose music is often characterised by her straight-talking personality, unmistakable vocals and ability to find humour in everyday life.
White has been writing songs since she was 12, blending traditional country storytelling with contemporary influences and a distinctly Australian attitude. Her early releases helped establish her reputation before she was crowned the 2020 Toyota Star Maker winner, joining a celebrated list of past recipients including Keith Urban, Lee Kernaghan and Kaylee Bell. Her 2021 single ‘Running Away Tonight’ later earned her a nomination for New Talent of the Year at the 2022 Golden Guitar Awards.
Her second album, Dirty Laundry, arrived in 2023, produced by ARIA and Golden Guitar Award-winning producer Matt Fell. White has since continued to build her reputation through extensive touring across Australia and internationally, while also becoming a familiar presence in the live shows of fellow country artist and husband Brad Cox. Their 2022 duet ‘Love On The Line’ earned her a finalist placing at the 2023 Queensland Music Awards.
While her catalogue often celebrates life's unpredictable moments with humour and honesty, ‘Where All the Good Dogs Go’ shows how naturally her songwriting can shift towards more personal territory.
Through Melody's story, White has created a tribute that will resonate with animal lovers who understand how deeply a pet can become woven into the fabric of everyday life.
And perhaps that's what makes the song so relatable. Long after the muddy paw prints have disappeared, the memories of a good dog have a way of staying with us.
'Where All the Good Dogs Go’ is available now on all major streaming platforms.
